Five photographs. The same train, the same carriage, one seat along.

Wiederkehr is the German word for return — the coming back of something that has already happened once.

The sequence was made on the same Shinkansen line as Vorfreude, in the same carriage, from 12C instead of 11C, travelling on to Nagoya. The mountain was there. It stayed behind cloud.

What the photographs record is what a return actually yields: the same window, the same route, the same gestures, and a view already spent. Anticipation cannot be booked twice.

“I kept the carriage and moved one seat along — 12C instead of 11C — as though the difference could be made small enough not to count.

Fuji stayed behind cloud the whole way to Nagoya. I had expected to feel cheated, and did not. There was nothing left to cheat. The wanting had been used up the first time, and what remained was a train, a window, an afternoon.

This is the half of the argument the first project could not make. Anticipation does not survive its own fulfilment, and it does not come back. You only learn that by going again — which is why the second journey was worth taking, and why it is the weaker one to look at.”
